The new Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM), which will combine the activities of three Montreal hospitals as of 2016, presents immense challenges in terms of harmonizing and optimizing the various operating procedures of its many areas of activity. Despite political debates regarding its location, the CHUM’s construction is underway and the countdown towards the big move has begun.

Procédurable elaborated and implemented a process characterization methodology related to the new hospital’s areas of activity, which aims to manage the planning and development of its processes. This characterization work consisted of describing, through semantic interrelation, the work pertaining to the services in order to clarify the operational representation of the processes involved in the move. This characterization aimed to identify and join together specific activities carried out by the CHUM’s various stakeholders and to simplify decision-making based on procedural information that is more comprehensive. A doctoral thesis was realized studying this project (http://regisbarondeau.com/blogpost37). The collaborative and semantic characterization tool took into account the linked realities of the CHUM’s hospital and support services, which are inevitably interdependent. These groups of concepts, called ontologies, were structured beforehand, allowing collaborators to interlink their activities with more precision and to address issues in a systematic manner, with better access to the full capacities of the hospital’s process management and operational planning tools. By doing so, Procédurable enabled medical and paramedical responders to optimize their activity according to high-level security, quality and performance requirements, as would be expected of a medical infrastructure project of this magnitude. As a characterization advisor, Procédurable was committed to meeting these challenges, particularly in the areas of medical support and logistics management, by creating a collaborative Internet portal based on the innovative Semantic Web (W3C) and by promoting open source technologies.

outilVIF

A portfolio to support the francization process of newcomers in Quebec.

In our current socioeconomic context, immigrants are increasingly expected to be more self-reliant when it comes to learning French. Thus, the outilVIF digital portfolio is an online tool that provides customizable learning approaches based on each user’s life course.

outilVIF is a learning activity manager that allows immigrants in the process of learning French to elaborate and share digital portfolios. The tool was developed by social organization percolab for the Laval and Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Boards as well as CEGEP Montmorency.

Procédurable managed the design of the digital porfolio’s learning modules and help files. We supported the training of the teaching staff by providing the appropriate tools to implement the portfolio. This proposed new learning approach represents an innovation in the process of integrating and francizing newcomers in Quebec. In addition to being useful to newcomers, it is adapted to the needs of those who teach French as a second language and work in immigration support.

Results: Creating thirty modules of a learning portfolio

Jeunes ambassadeurs du savoir (JAS)

Jeunes ambassadeurs du savoir (JAS) is an educational program developed by percolab for the Institut de Coopération pour l'Éducation des Adultes (ICÉA), an organization dedicated to supporting academic perseverance, helping dropouts re-enter school and promoting the innovations of young adults who lack the resources and support to make their work known to the general public.

Procédurable collaborated with JAS by conducting project management and technopedagogical analysis activities involved in elaborating a reflective learning tool destined to drop-outs between the ages of 16 and 30 who wish to re-enter school. The tool would allow these young people to develop skills to help promote lifelong learning:
- introducing themselves and speaking about their experience in various ways;
- gaining awareness of their capability to act;
- increasing their technological skills;
- contributing to the network of the Jeunes ambassadeurs du savoir program;
- sharing their personal tools and strategies with the other participants of the program and learning from these people;
- accounting for their actions and assessing their results;
- improving their learning practices.

Espace d’information et de collaboration pour les programmes (PICS)

Problem areas regarding European customs and taxation demand close collaboration between the national administrations of the twenty-seven states that form the European Union. Thus, the Taxation and Customs Union Directorate-General has opted for the deployment of a secure information sharing portal to better assist national administrations in their crucial collaboration.

The Programmes Information and Collaboration Space is an Internet portal that aims to provide consistency in administrating the European Union’s taxes and customs. The space has made it possible to develop and strengthen the national programmes of member states. In addition, it has generated substantial savings and allowed member states to share a wide variety of processes and methods. PICS proved to be effective in enhancing national databases with various data, in addition to allowing content co-creation and information sharing within a political unit, whose proper operation essentially relies on the ability of the EU’s 27 countries to cooperate and pool their know-how.

In collaboration with percolab, who spearheaded the PICS project, Procédurable conducted various quality controls on the portal during its development in order to prepare the organizational changes to be implemented by the national administrations.

Fab Labs Québec et échoFab

“The Fab Lab concept aims to provide the industrial world with the spirit of sharing, innovation and free access that characterizes the Internet, through freeware and social networks, for instance. Offering anyone access to simple industrial machines at a low cost enables communities to break from traditional production modes” - Raphaël Moran (at a “make-your-own-washing-machine”, Fab Lab, rue89.com).

Project Type: Joint initiative

A Fab Lab embodies the community workshop concept, providing open, hands-on access to modern fabrication tools in a local workspace. Offering its services to the entire population, this open workshop is destined to meet the needs of a community’s organizations and citizens in terms of creation, innovation, experimentation, prototyping, and product development.

The co-operation between Communautique and Procédurable gave rise to the Fab Labs Québec movement and to the creation by Communautique of échoFab, the first Quebec-based Fab Lab to which Procédurable contributed.

The goal of this workshop is to apply the principles of the Fab Labs movement by providing open access to cutting-edge technologies. This enables entrepreneurs, teachers, artists, educators, designers, engineers, machinists, health professionals and many others in the Montreal area to bring their numerous and diverse projects to fruition on their own.

With a view to fostering development, Procédurable is seeking regional and provincial partners who value the integration and democratization of technology in their community.
Thus, Procédurable’s mission is to engage partners who can help acquire machining equipment essential to most of the work performed in a Fab Lab workshop (laser cutting, digital milling machines, 3d printers and scanners, etc.) as well as promote and support the movement’s mission regionally, nationally, and internationally.
